What is INTACS®?
Intracorneal ring segments, or INTACS® corneal implants, are an ophthalmic medical device designed for the reduction or elimination of myopia and astigmatism in patients with keratoconus. Intrastromal corneal ring segments can be implanted into the cornea to flatten the bulging cornea in severe keratoconus. Functional vision may be restored and the need for a corneal transplant procedure can potentially be eliminated.
Is INTACS® Right for Me?
INTACS® has been FDA-approved since 2004 for the treatment of irregular astigmatism associated with keratoconus. It is intended for use in people with severe keratoconus or ectasia after refractive surgery where good vision is not attainable with glasses or contact lenses. It is a treatment to be considered prior to cornea transplantation. Even with INTACS®, glasses or contact lenses will possibly still be necessary to correct your vision.
